How many nights in Bangkok, and what a first-timer should do with them
Four nights is the honest minimum for a first visit; five or six is better. Day one for Rattanakosin — Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Wat Arun by cross-river ferry — starting before 9am because the Palace closes at 3:30pm and the queue thickens by 11. Day two for Chatuchak Weekend Market (Saturday or Sunday only, 8am-6pm, over 15,000 stalls) or Jim Thompson House in Pathumwan, ending on Yaowarat for the street food after dark.
Day three works as a day trip: Ayutthaya by train from Hua Lamphong takes 1h 20m and costs $0.50-2, or the River Kwai and Kanchanaburi at 2h 30m by train. Keep day four for Sukhumvit — Thonglor bars, an Ekkamai coffee morning, a Sathorn rooftop at sunset. A sixth night lets you add Nakhon Pathom's Phra Pathom Chedi or a slower morning at Wat Saket (the Golden Mount).
What Bangkok hotels actually cost in $
Budget in Bangkok means $12-30 for a hostel dorm or a fan room in Banglamphu, $30-55 for an air-con private with a small bathroom in Silom or Pratunam. Mid-range is $60-130 and gets you a four-star chain on Sukhumvit with a pool, a proper breakfast and BTS within a five-minute walk — this is the bracket where Bangkok is unusually good value against any other Asian capital. Top-end runs $180-500 for a river-view suite at a Chao Phraya property, and the historic grande dames on the river sit at $400-900.
Rates spike three times: mid-December to early January (add 40-60%), Chinese New Year week, and Songkran (13-15 April). May, June and September are the cheapest months — the same Sukhumvit four-star that costs $140 in January will list at $75-85. Book the December peak six to eight weeks out; outside that, two weeks is fine.
The temple-stay question: where to base yourself for Bangkok's religious sites
Most visitors book Sukhumvit and then discover the temples are 40 minutes away in traffic — this is the booking trap. Wat Pho, Wat Arun, the Grand Palace, Wat Saket and Wat Suthat are all in Rattanakosin and Phra Nakhon, and there is no BTS or MRT station inside the old walls. Staying in Banglamphu, along Phra Athit or on the Rattanakosin side of the river puts you within walking distance of the reclining Buddha and a $0.50 ferry from Wat Arun.
If you are here for the Vegetarian Festival in Chinatown (nine days in September or October, based at Wat Mangkon Kamalawat) or for Makha Bucha and Visakha Bucha (February and May full moons, when Wat Benchamabophit in Dusit lights up), book Yaowarat or Dusit rather than Sukhumvit — the commute back at 10pm through Ratchadamnoen is worse than people expect. Dress code at all working temples is shoulders and knees covered; the Grand Palace enforces it strictly and rents sarongs at the gate.
